Child Canadian Passport
Canadian children under the age of 16 require their own Canadian passport to travel internationally and to enter the United States.
Child passports cannot be renewed; a new child passport application is required each time.
To apply for a Canadian child passport, you must provide:
- Proof of the child’s Canadian citizenship (e.g., Canadian birth certificate or citizenship certificate)
- Proof of parent or legal guardian relationship to the child (e.g., child’s birth certificate listing parents or official guardianship documents)
- A guarantor who can confirm the identity of the child’s parent(s) or legal guardian(s) acting as the applicant
In most cases, both parents or all legal guardians must be listed on the application and may be required to sign the child’s passport application or provide written consent.
Parental or Legal Guardian Requirements
Passport Canada requires that:
- One parent or legal guardian must act as the applicant
- All parents/legal guardians with custody rights must be identified
- Proof of legal custody arrangements must be provided, if applicable
- A signed Parent/Guardian Declaration must be included
If one parent is unavailable or refuses to sign, additional documentation may be required.
Our team will guide you through these situations to help you avoid delays.
Guarantor Requirements
A guarantor is required for all child passport applications.
A qualified guarantor must:
- Have known the applying parent or guardian for at least two years
- Live in Canada or the United States
- Be able to communicate in English or French
- The parent or legal guardian who is not acting as the applicant and meets all guarantor requirements may serve as the guarantor
Accepted guarantors include:
- Canadian guarantors with a valid Canadian passport
- Professional guarantors who meet Passport Program requirements
- Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor, if no eligible guarantor is available
