Don’t feel pressure to sign your child’s passport!
International border officials have occasionally required that a child’s Canadian passport be signed by either the child or their parent. If a parent sign his/her child passport, the passport becomes invalid consequently may prevent the child from travelling.
Children under 16 years of age do not need to sign their passport. The signature line on page 3 should be blank if the child cannot provide a signature.
Parents or legal guardians must never sign their child’s passport. Their signature makes the document invalid and it will have to be replaced.
But don’t forget that when your child apply for his first adult Canadian passport, after age sixteen, he now must signed.
Canada’s Passport Program’s “signature policy” aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements.
